Support for School in Puente de Coyula
Agatha, a category 2 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale, hit the Oaxaca coast on May 30, 2022, between Tonameca and Pochutla, with gusts of more than 200 km/h, causing major property damage in 30 municipalities of the coast and the Sierra Sur.
The rainfall of almost 300 mm caused by Agatha provoked rivers and streams to grow enormously and overflow their banks. Landslides and floods claimed the lives of at least nine people, and many more are still missing. In addition, there was enormous property damage to thousands of homes, crops, tourist infrastructure, highways, bridges, and rural roads.
My name is Noé Pérez Aquino. I am a teacher at the Ignacio Manuel Altamirano Elementary School here in the municipality of Puente de Coyula, which is located near two bodies of water. To the west, a stream passes by and to the south is the bank of a river.
The school suffered great damage to infrastructure, office supplies and electronic equipment such as computers, printers, audio equipment, etc. In total, five classrooms, the administration area, the kitchen, and the student toilets were affected.
Here we are in the dining room. We had a refrigerator in the back. The refrigerator, stove and gas tank were destroyed because the water level rose about three and a half meters above the level of the school. Basically, the result was a complete destruction.
We are in a risk zone. On Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday there was a lot of support from the communities, people from the surrounding areas and the village administration. The park rangers joined in, as well as various civic associations and. We washed chairs, tables, etc. and salvaged what could be salvaged, but still there is much work ahead. We need financial support. We also need heavy machinery to remove the layer of mud that was left all over the village, the break ground, the sports fields, and the soccer field. And we need to pick up all the garbage so that the rivers are not polluted.
There is still a lot of work to be done. There are still many needs which we must address.
We would like to give classes again as soon as possible, but this is not possible now because of the conditions at the school. We hope to receive your support to achieve this goal and resume classes soon.Noé Pérez Aquino
Teacher at the School
During a tour with state and federal education authorities, it was decided that the school will be relocated to prevent damage from future meteorological phenomena. While the new school is being built, it is necessary to temporarily provide a dignified and safe space for the children's education. The Solidaridad Huatulco project will support the cause within its financial possibilities. We thank everyone for their unconditional support through their donations. We will keep you informed of the progress.
