Solidaridad Huatulco
Think, consume and support locally!
Help us support the most vulnerable people of Huatulco during this crisis!
Background of the Project
Why the Solidaridad Huatulco project was initiated
A large part of the population of Santa Maria Huatulco and its surroundings is directly or indirectly dependent on the income generated by national and international tourism. However, this has come to a complete standstill due to the lockdown triggered by the Corona crisis.

As a result, many inhabitants have lost a large part of their already modest income. Since it is to be expected that the tourists will not immediately return in their usual form even after the lifting of the lockdown, it can unfortunately be assumed that the economic crisis will continue for the local population for at least a few months.
Unfortunately, most of these people cannot count on state support or aid programmes as we see them in other countries. Many people also cannot fall back on savings, as their difficult economic situation simply does not allow them to build them up.

Emergency Aid
Emergency aid through local food supply chains
In a first phase, the Solidaridad Huatulco project aims to start at this point and provide the weakest sections of the population with food. As long as the lockdown lasts, we want to deliver food directly to the homes of people with a disability. In addition, we want to support community kitchens with food supplies, which have been created in the last days and weeks to provide free meals to people in need.
In order to ensure that as much of this aid as possible is passed on to the local population, we obtain the largest possible share of the food from local producers in the agricultural and fishing sectors. In this way, we can use the same dollar not only to help the recipients of the supplies, but also to generate a direct income for small local producers. Even basic foodstuffs such as rice, beans, oil, etc. are not purchased from the huge nationwide supermarket chains, but from smaller local grocery stores.
Another goal is to provide the highest quality, healthy food possible. For this reason, we primarily work with the members and producers of the group Mercado Orgánico Hutulco (Organic Market Huatulco), which exclusively sells food from organic production. We have anchored our philosophy in our slogan: piensa, consume y ayuda local - think, consume and support locally.
Sustainable Help
Sustainability through workshops and local aid projects
The members of the Solidaridad Huatulco project are aware that no sustainable effect can be achieved with direct aid through the delivery of food. These are necessary in the first phase to avert the worst effects of this economic crisis. In the medium and long term, however, we also want to invest in local projects that have a sustainable benefit for the community.

A proven means to achieve this are workshops and courses, which we would like to offer. In these we would like to show people in poor circumstances how they can grow their own vegetables at home with simple means. Or how local producers can make products such as jam or tinned food from their fruits. This not only makes their products storable for longer, but also generates added value that leads to higher sales revenues.
Furthermore, we would also like to finance smaller local aid projects that help the population in the long term. We are considering, for example, offering free therapy sessions for people from poor backgrounds, or financing community gardens that can provide the local population with cheap and healthy food.
First Steps
In the first days of May we delivered the first packages of healthy local food supplies to more than 50 families with members with disabilities in and around Santa Maria Huatulco!
